Preventing Injury
May 15, 2006
While it is important to exercise and stay fit, it is equally as important to prevent injury. There are a few guidelines to help you train injury free. Regardless of the sport or activity you choose, you must be sure to select the proper equipment and footwear. Before starting any activity, always warm-up. This should consist of stretching exercises for flexibility and range of motion. A warm-up will get the blood flowing to the muscles, and increase body temperature. When beginning the main part of your routine you should start slowly and gradually increase the intensity so your heart, muscles, and lungs adapt to the demands. Cool down is essential to complete your exercise. This allows the muscles to release the heat and prevent them from cramping. A perfect way to cool down is to walk slowly until the heart rate falls and then stretch all of the muscle groups you worked. Preventing injury will allow you to enjoy exercise, sports, and all types of physical activity for many years to come.
